It checks the ability to distinguish between strong and light contrasts. Also useful for detecting the regression, stationarity or progression of cataracts.

This test is performed from a distance of 30-40 cm and assesses the cooperation between the two eyes in forming a single image in the brain from the two images perceived separately by each eye. It can be used with children from one year of age and adults if strabismus, amblyopia or decreased vision in one or both eyes is suspected.
